(Summary description)The non-woven cotton technology developed by Texas Tech University in the United States protects soldiers in chemical and biological warfare. This product can also act as an ideal sponge for absorbing oil that pollutes the Gulf of Mexico.

　　 After the explosion of the deep-water oil rig, oil continued to flow in. A non-woven cotton technology expert from Texas Tech University said that the fabric we developed may have better oil absorption effect than products made of synthetic materials.

Ramkumar Seshadri, associate professor of non-woven materials at the College of Environment and Human Health (TIEHH), said that in order to prevent oil from flowing into the Gulf, millions of feet of oil have been delineated, but synthetic materials are used, which do not degrade. The oil absorption rate is only one third of that of raw cotton. The oil absorption rate of raw cotton can reach 40 times its own weight. After chemical treatment, the oil absorption rate may reach 70 times its own weight. And this material will not stay in the landfill forever.

　　 Ramkumar's research focuses on the use of non-woven materials and nanotechnology to develop value-added materials. He oversees the non-woven fabrics and advanced materials laboratory at TIEHH.

　　 He is the inventor of several non-woven cotton technologies, including FibertectTM. The current pollution kits of the US military use his invented technology. He and his team of graduate students are studying how to use low-quality cotton in garment production.

　　 Ramkumar said: The US non-woven fabric industry has very good technology to develop natural fiber oil-absorbing liners, such as cotton.
